Les Encodages de l’oubli is very proud to release Erin Sexton’s Horizon double album.
Recent years have seen Erin Sexton earn accolades and praise from Montreal’s vibrant sound art and improvised music scenes. After her first independent release, Aircraft (2004), and many subsequent collaborative projects, her highly anticipated Horizon double album has finally arrived on les encodages de l’oubli.
An experiment in sonic immanence, SOLO (CD1) features soft electrical drones, physical feedback, oscillating waves, analog noise and electromagnetic flux delicately manipulated by the artist creating fields, striking surfaces, and touching the bare circuitry of her homemade electronics. She is slowly, patiently inserting electrified metallic objects into your ears, moving them slightly in and out of tune with the cosmic microwave background, conducting oscillations directly to your brain, inducing otherworldly sonic experiences. Raw yet refined, theoretical yet embodied, challenging yet ecstatic, these pieces zoom into the microcosm, amplify the æther and discover subatomic delight.
DUOS (CD2) proposes four collaborations with some of Quebec’s foremost sound artists and composers: Magali Babin, Érick d’Orion, Martin Tétreault and Hélène Prévost. These improvisations combine Erin Sexton’s subtle and singular vibrations with the well-known personalities of her counterparts, making it a listening experience that transcends the firmament, exploring four distinct sonic worlds.
Sexton herself draws from EAI, free jazz, onkyokei, drone and minimalist influences including Phil Niblock, Otomo Yoshide, Eliane Radigue, Alvin Lucier, Charlemagne Palestine, Sun Ra, and Maryanne Amacher. She has collaborated with Ignaz Schick, Chantale Laplante, Gayle Young, Bryan Eubanks, Greg Kelley, Jesse Kudler, Emilie Mouchous, Alain Lefebvre, Chris Strickland, Philippe Lauzier, and many more.
